While the Democratic Republic of Congo has the natural and human resources to be one of the richest countries on earth, it instead has the unenviable distinction of having the lowest per capita GDP in the world. Conflict and sexual violence are robbing generations of children in eastern Congo of a peaceful and dignified life. An absence of schools, health care, and reliable income-generating opportunities handicaps their communities’ ability to emerge from crisis. If this moment is to be a turning point in the history of the region, the discussion must start with an appreciation of the history and issues that created it.
