The Congolese government has embarked on two national peace and reconciliation programs, the Amani Peace program, which was completed in July 2009, and the Stabilization Program for Eastern DRC (STAREC), which is focused on returning soldiers to their communities, education, training, health, and infrastructure development. The STAREC program was announced in August 2009 by President Joseph Kabila and Reverend Malu Malu was designated chief of the program.
Community-based organizations in eastern Congo are bringing together people from different communities and ethnic groups through sports, the arts, media, community associations, conferences and gatherings.
