AFEM

Promoting women’s rights, peace, equality and empowerment through media, AFEM provides equipment and training for rural women journalists in the Congo. This is one example of how community-based organizations in eastern Congo are bringing together people from different communities and ethnic groups through media and the arts.

Focusing on available media outlets, AFEM is reaching women across eastern Congo through seven different radio clubs, providing training and portable equipment.

IMPACT: The level of professionalism in journalists in eastern Congo increases overall, as does the capacity of female media professionals. A growing portfolio of shows and hundreds of hours of broadcasting cover critical topics such as: gender, sexual violence and good governance.

IMPACT: More exposure to these issues at the community level helps challenge prevailing practices and customs.
