Assessing the Growth Potential of Eastern Congo’s Coffee and Cocoa Sectors

In partnership with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Eastern Congo Initiative facilitated and helped produce a report on the potentials and challenges surrounding the cultivation of cash-crops in Congo. This report weighs up the size of the potential risks, compared with the opportunities on offer, and suggests some strategies for overcoming them. Material is drawn from expert interviews and a literature review of global best practices in the coffee and cocoa sectors. The evidence suggests that expectations for the DRC should be realistic. Eastern Congo is highly unlikely to become the next Colombia of coffee production or displace Côte d’Ivoire as the world’s leading source of cocoa. Nevertheless, there is potential to scale up coffee and cocoa production in the DRC in a sustainable way that improves the livelihoods of smallholder farmers

Taking a Stand on Security Sector Reform

In partnership with an international coalition of civil society organizations, Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI) launced a joint report on security sector reform (SSR) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The report discusses the opportunity that now exists for the international community to partner with the Government of the DRC to reform the security sector and, in doing so, take concrete steps towards creating a better future for the country. This report describes a path towards greater security if reform of the military, police and judicial sector is supported by firm commitments from the government of the DRC and the international community.

Community-based Organization (CBO) Landscape Analysis Report

With the generous support of USAID, Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI) conducted a landscape analysis in eastern DRC to fill this knowledge gap. Between January and May 2011, ECI deployed researchers to Maniema, North Kivu, Orientale, and South Kivu provinces to study development activities and to identify and assess CBOs.
